DP Expresses Understanding of Military’s Reserved Response to North Korea’s Drone Allegations

SEOUL: The main opposition Democratic Party (DP) on Tuesday expressed understanding of the military's decision to neither confirm nor deny North Korea's claims that South Korea had sent drones over Pyongyang, suggesting that the issue should be approached with caution. According to Yonhap News Agency, the DP's softened stance comes after initial criticism where the party condemned the military's ambiguous response to the North's accusations as "irresponsible" and disrespectful to the people. This change in position followed the inaugural meeting of the party's committee on national security. "Our position is that we should take a prudent approach rather than determining who did what," Rep. Park Sun-won, a member of the committee, stated. He further mentioned that the United Nations Command's ongoing investigation into the claims could provide a platform for communication between North and South Korea, which might help stabilize the situation. The allegations from the North, which emerged on Friday, claimed that South Korea had flown drones over Pyongyang on three separate occasions this month, warning of severe repercussions if such actions continued. In response, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff maintained a neutral stance, neither confirming nor denying the allegations.
