Hyundai Rotem Leads Development of World’s First Hydrogen-Powered Military Tank

SEOUL: Hyundai Rotem Co., a defense solutions company based in South Korea, is advancing the development of the world's first hydrogen fuel-based tank, industry sources revealed on Wednesday. The endeavor is part of an effort to modernize the existing K2 main battle tank by integrating cutting-edge technology, and it is expected to reach production stages after 2040. According to Yonhap News Agency, Hyundai Rotem is collaborating with the Agency for Defense Development and several defense technology research institutes to design a next-generation tank model. This innovative vehicle will utilize hydrogen fuel cells, effectively replacing the traditional diesel engine of the K2 tank. The hydrogen-powered tank will be equipped to handle challenging terrains and landscapes while incorporating stealth capabilities and autonomous features. In addition to its hydrogen propulsion system, the tank will boast a 130-millimeter smoothbore gun and the ability to operate drones. An artificial intelligence-based fire cont rol system is expected to enhance its preemptive strike capabilities significantly. Hyundai Rotem aims to first develop a hybrid model that combines diesel and electric power before transitioning to a fully hydrogen-powered tank. An official from Hyundai Rotem stated, "The next-generation tank will have stronger preemptive strike capabilities using an artificial intelligence-based fire control system." This initiative marks a significant milestone in military technology, as it will be the first time a hydrogen-powered tank is developed.
