From Cautious Youth to Seasoned Actor: Gang Dong-won Reflects on Two Decades of Acting

SEOUL: Actor Gang Dong-won expressed gratitude for his latest film, "Uprising," being selected as the opening title at this year's Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), marking a significant milestone in his career. It has been 14 years since one of his films last headlined the esteemed event. According to Yonhap News Agency, the 43-year-old actor shared his reflections during an interview with local reporters in Seoul. Gang Dong-won described his younger self as "somewhat unstable" and more cautious in public interactions. Over the years, he has gained a better understanding of himself and feels more comfortable in public settings. In "Uprising," a period action epic set during the Joseon Dynasty, Gang portrays Cheon-yeong, a slave who forms a bond with his master, Jong-ryo, played by Park Jeong-min. The narrative follows their journey as they navigate war and social upheaval, ultimately reuniting as adversaries. The film features contributions from acclaimed director Park Chan-wook as both a producer and scriptwriter, and it made history as the first over-the-top production to open BIFF. Rated unsuitable for viewers under 19, the film achieved the No. 3 spot on Netflix's non-English films chart with over 15 million views worldwide. Gang Dong-won found the script's emphasis on character narratives to be "unconventional," yet he appreciated the vivid descriptions. Known for his sword-fighting prowess, Gang showcased his skills in the film, drawing from his experience in previous period epics such as "Duelist" and "Kundo: Age of the Rampant." His dedication to mastering action scenes has been evident throughout his career, including extensive training for "Duelist." Reflecting on his acting journey, Gang noted that while acting has not become easier, it has become more natural for him. He acknowledged the gap between his self-perception and audience perceptions, emphasizing the importance of closing that gap in his performances.
