Korean Artist Prize Exhibition Highlights Innovative Works by Four Finalists

Seoul: The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) in Seoul is set to open an exhibition showcasing the works of the four finalists for the prestigious 2024 Korean Artist Prize. The exhibition, featuring a diverse range of artistic expressions, will be on public display starting Friday, highlighting the innovative contributions of each artist to contemporary art. According to Yonhap News Agency, artist Yang Jung-uk presents a giant kinetic sculpture titled "Someone I Know, in His Garden I've Never Seen," which reflects his personal memories of gardens tended by his wife and father. The sculpture, composed of wood, motors, lamps, and threads, moves in synchronized motions, intriguing viewers with its dynamic presence. Yang's work draws inspiration from his own semi-autobiographical novel and seeks to capture the essence of cherished individuals through repurposed components. Yang is joined by three other finalists: Kwon Ha-yoon, Yoon Ji-young, and Jane Jin Kaisen. Kwon Ha-yoon explores technica l media such as 3-D animation, documentaries, and virtual reality to evoke spaces within personal memories. Yoon Ji-young employs her sculptural language to reveal the underlying structures of sacrifice and faith embedded in society. Jane Jin Kaisen, a Korean adoptee based in Denmark, delves into themes of memory, migration, and cultural translation through her video works. Her exhibition, "Ieodo (Island Beyond the Sea)," features seven videos focusing on Korean female divers known as "haenyeo" and the unique culture and history of Jeju Island. The curated exhibition aims to foster dialogue between the films, emphasizing symbolic gestures and shamanistic rituals. Each finalist receives 50 million won (approximately $36,000) to support their work, with the final winner, to be announced in February, receiving an additional 10 million won. The exhibition will run through March 23, offering visitors a chance to engage with the cutting-edge creations of these promising artists.
