Air Force Conducts Drills to Counter Large-Scale Aerial Attacks Amid North Korean Threats

PYEONGTAEK: The Air Force conducted extensive drills on Friday to enhance its capabilities in responding to large-scale aerial attacks, as concerns mount over North Korea's evolving military threats. These exercises are part of a broader effort to strengthen readiness and defense mechanisms in the region. According to Yonhap News Agency, the drills involved approximately 70 warplanes, including F-35A stealth fighters, and various air defense systems. The scenario simulated around 800 North Korean aerial targets penetrating South Korean airspace, testing the response of the Air Force. The fighter jets practiced intercepting incoming aircraft, while air defense systems like the Cheongung-II medium-range surface-to-air missile system focused on neutralizing cruise and ballistic missiles. The exercise also prioritized training pilots to intercept cruise missiles and destroy ballistic missile launch sites. The Air Force emphasized that the drills did not include live ammunition due to safety concerns. The emphas is was on precision and coordination to ensure effective defense capabilities without compromising safety. In a show of support and oversight, South Korea's top military official visited the drills at Osan Air Base, located 60 kilometers south of Seoul. The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) reported that Adm. Kim Myung-soo, JCS Chairman, urged troops to maintain an "overwhelming" state of readiness against potential North Korean aggression. Adm. Kim also took the opportunity to visit the U.S. Space Forces Korea headquarters, advocating for a robust cooperation system in space to counter the increasing threats posed by North Korea's space and missile programs. The air drills occur against the backdrop of North Korea's continued advancement of its missile capabilities, marked by 16 missile launches this year alone. This persistent activity has heightened regional tensions and underscored the need for South Korea to maintain and enhance its defensive posture.
