S. Korea to Brief NATO on North Korean Troop Presence in Russia

BRUSSELS: Senior South Korean officials are set to brief the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) regarding the presence of North Korean troops in Russia, with indications pointing to their potential deployment against Ukrainian forces. The briefing, scheduled for Monday, will occur at NATO's headquarters in Brussels and will include ambassadors from NATO's Indo-Pacific partners-Australia, Japan, New Zealand, and South Korea. According to Yonhap News Agency, the South Korean delegation, composed of high-level intelligence, defense, and foreign officials, is visiting NATO headquarters to provide the briefing following confirmation by South Korea and the United States of North Korea's dispatch of approximately 3,000 troops to eastern Russia. The troops are reportedly positioned for potential involvement in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Ukraine has asserted that these North Korean troops are moving toward the Kursk border region in western Russia, a site of a recent Ukrainian incursion in August. The d elegation, led by First Deputy Director of the National Intelligence Service Hong Jang-won, is anticipated to present NATO with detailed assessments of the troop deployment and their activities. The discussions may also cover potential support measures for Ukraine, including the possibility of sending a team of South Korean intelligence and other officials to Kyiv to monitor the North Korean troops. Additionally, the delegation is expected to explore South Korea's options for aiding Ukraine, which might involve reconsidering its current nonlethal aid policy in favor of providing weapons. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte is scheduled to deliver a statement to the media following the briefing, offering further insights into the international response to the developments.
