SEOUL: Soldiers believed to be North Koreans are reportedly lining up to receive military outfits in Russia, as captured in images from the Ukrainian military's social media account. In response, Ukraine has initiated a psychological operation aimed at encouraging these troops to surrender, using broadcasts in Korean and sharing footage of meals provided to prisoners of war. According to Yonhap News Agency, Ukraine's psychological campaign, prominently featured on their Telegram channel titled "I Want to Live," promises North Korean soldiers warm meals and medical services if they surrender. The initiative is part of a broader cognitive warfare strategy aimed at influencing the mindset and actions of enemy troops. However, experts suggest that the campaign may not be effectively targeting the North Korean soldiers' motivations. Hyun In-ae, a North Korean defector and academic at Ewha Womans University in Seoul, criticized the focus on food as ineffective, noting that the North Korean troops in Russia are li kely special forces and better nourished than average soldiers. She advised that Ukraine should focus on messages of hope and the potential for a new life in a free country, such as South Korea, to resonate more deeply with the soldiers' situation and psychological state. The North Korean soldiers, mostly in their teens or early 20s, are reportedly deployed to assist Russia in its conflict against Ukraine. The decision, attributed to North Korea's leader Kim Jong-un, is seen as an attempt to secure financial gain and potential technological transfers from Russia. South Korean Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun expressed concerns that these soldiers might become cannon fodder in the ongoing conflict. Amid these developments, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has indicated that his country might consider sending lethal weapons to Ukraine, though he emphasized that this should be a last resort. He also underscored the importance of persuading North Korean soldiers to defect, offering them the opportunity for a new life in South Korea. The situation highlights a potential area for cooperation between South Korea and Ukraine, leveraging South Korea's experience in psychological operations targeting North Korean soldiers. As the conflict continues, the international community closely watches the ramifications of the Russia-North Korea military cooperation and its impact on regional stability.
