Daegu: Today marks the anniversary of a significant event in Korean history. In 1864, Choi Je-u, the founder of the "Donghak" (eastern learning) movement, was executed in Daegu. Choi was charged with misleading the public through what were considered false religious theories. The Donghak movement emerged in response to the deteriorating rural economy, which suffered under heavy taxation and the removal of substantial rice quantities by Japan.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the movement initially gained traction in South Jeolla Province. Donghak was a direct challenge to the influx of Western Christianity, advocating instead for Korea's indigenous beliefs, including "Pungsu," a form of divination based on topography, and "Innaecheon," which posits that individuals are equal to heaven.
In another chapter of Korean history, 1937 saw the forced relocation of around 20,000 Koreans to northeastern China by Japan, which had colonized Korea since 1910. The following year, An Chang-ho, a prominent activist and one of the founders of Korea's provisional government, passed away at 60. An dedicated his life to Korea's independence from Japanese rule.
The late 20th century brought new developments. In 1959, South Korean labor unions celebrated their first Labor Day, later moved to May 1. Diplomatic relations between South Korea and Colombia were established in 1962, marking an important international partnership.
The realm of sports witnessed a landmark achievement in 1990 when boxer Lee Yul-woo claimed the World Boxing Association flyweight title. Fast forward to 2016, North Korea announced it would nullify cross-border economic agreements, liquidating South Korean assets in response to Seoul's sanctions.
In recent history, the Constitutional Court in 2017 upheld the impeachment of President Park Geun-hye, resulting in her removal from office and a subsequent presidential election. In 2021, South Korea's foreign ministry confirmed a 13.9 percent increase in payments for U.S. troops stationed in the country, strengthening the U.S.-South Korea alliance. The political landscape further shifted in 2022 with Yoon Suk Yeol's narrow victory over Lee Jae-myung, becoming South Korea's next president.
