Busan: Hanwha Ocean Co. announced on Monday that it has secured a substantial 2.3 trillion-won (US$1.59 billion) order from Taiwan's Evergreen Marine Corp. to construct six ultra-large liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers.
According to Yonhap News Agency, these vessels, each with a capacity of 24,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU), will incorporate advanced eco-friendly technologies developed by Hanwha Ocean, including dual-fuel engines and shaft generator motors. This deal represents Hanwha's inaugural contract with Evergreen Marine, a prominent player in global maritime shipping, operating over 200 vessels worldwide.
Hanwha Ocean indicated that the global shipbuilding industry is undergoing a significant transition toward LNG carriers and next-generation eco-friendly ships, driven by increasingly stringent environmental regulations. Evergreen Marine's choice to adopt an LNG dual-fuel propulsion system aligns with its strategy to comply with these regulations while optimizing fuel efficiency, as stated by the South Korean shipbuilder.
Hanwha Ocean also mentioned that Evergreen is likely to continue commissioning new orders for advanced vessels. The shipbuilder expressed its intention to establish a long-term business partnership with Evergreen Marine in the future.
