Seoul: South Korea's box office experienced a downturn last month, with a significant decline in ticket sales and attendance compared to the previous year, data revealed on Wednesday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the Korean Film Council reported that total cinema attendance fell by 52.2 percent year-on-year to 5.47 million. Additionally, sales dropped over 60 percent, amounting to 26.3 billion won (US$18.1 million). This decline was primarily attributed to the absence of major hit movies during the period.
The comedy-action film "Hitman 2" and the supernatural thriller "Dark Nuns," both released around the Lunar New Year holiday in January, managed to draw local audiences. However, their performances did not match the success of last year's supernatural thriller "Exhuma."
In contrast, the Hollywood blockbuster "Captain America: Brave New World," which premiered in South Korean theaters on February 12, emerged as the month's biggest hit. It generated 14.6 billion won in sales and attracted over 1.4 million moviegoers.
