Seoul: The ruling People Power Party (PPP) on Wednesday expressed regret following an appeals court's decision to overturn a suspended prison term for opposition leader Lee Jae-myung in an election law violation case. The court's decision has sparked significant reactions from political leaders.
According to Yonhap News Agency, PPP floor leader Kweon Seong-dong commented on the Seoul High Court's ruling, which overturned the suspended sentence against Lee Jae-myung of the Democratic Party. Lee had faced allegations of making false statements during the 2022 presidential election campaign.
Kweon, who has a background as a prosecutor, voiced his disbelief at the acquittal, noting that many politicians have seen their careers end over similar charges. He expressed hope that prosecutors would appeal the decision and called on the Supreme Court to address the case quickly to resolve the legal dispute.
Kwon Young-se, the PPP's interim leader, shared Kweon's perspective, indicating his expectation for the Supreme Court to make a swift ruling if an appeal is filed by prosecutors.
