Seoul: Today marks several significant events in Korean history, highlighting the country’s diplomatic and trade advancements over the years.
According to Yonhap News Agency, in 1899, the Joseon Dynasty, Korea’s last kingdom, signed a trade treaty with China’s Qing Dynasty, marking a critical step in international relations during that era. Fast forward to 1945, the operation of a railway line linking Seoul and Sinuiju was halted amid growing political tensions between the southern and northern regions of the Korean Peninsula, a precursor to the establishment of separate governments in 1948.
In the realm of international diplomacy, 1962 saw South Korea establishing diplomatic ties with Costa Rica, followed by the establishment of diplomatic relations with Tonga in 1970. Further strengthening its global connections, South Korea held its first summit meeting with Brazil in 1996, during which then-President Kim Young-sam and Brazilian leader Fernando Cardoso agreed to enhance bilateral trade and signed memorandums on tourism cooperation and visa issuance.
In 2000, a North Korean delegation arrived in Seoul for a four-day visit, following an inter-Korean summit in June of that year. By 2007, President Roh Moo-hyun prioritized establishing a new peace arrangement for the Korean Peninsula as a key agenda in his summit talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong-il.
The South Korean government announced in 2008 a plan to invest 3 trillion won in clean energy development over five years, indicating a shift towards sustainable energy solutions. In 2009, North Korea withdrew its demands for a wage increase at a South Korean-run industrial park, easing tensions following a deadly flash flood.
In 2013, South and North Korea agreed to resume operations at the Kaesong Industrial Complex, a joint venture that began in 2000 but faced shutdowns due to political conflicts. Lastly, in 2019, South Korea filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization against Japan over export restrictions on key industrial materials, a move that underscored ongoing trade disputes between the two nations.
