Busan: President Lee Jae Myung pledged Tuesday support to develop the southeastern port city of Busan into a major maritime and logistics hub following the relocation of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries to the city. Lee made the remarks during a Cabinet meeting at the ministry's new building in Busan, about 450 kilometers southeast of Seoul.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee emphasized that the relocation of the oceans ministry represents a significant opportunity for balanced regional development and a transformative phase for Busan. He committed to providing comprehensive fiscal and administrative support to aid Busan's growth into a leading industrial and logistics center, not only for South Korea but also for the entire Northeast Asian region.
To achieve this vision, Lee outlined government plans to expand port facilities, enhance high value-added services, and support regional industry growth. These efforts aim to position Busan and the broader southeastern region as a pivotal hub for the development of Arctic shipping routes.
The strategic relocation of the ministry follows the recent resignation of former Oceans Minister Chun Jae-soo, who stepped down amid allegations of receiving illegal funds and luxury gifts from the Unification Church. In addressing the resulting leadership gap during this crucial period, Lee announced his intention to nominate a new minister, potentially selecting a candidate from Busan.
