Seoul: Hyundai Motor Group has officially commenced mass production of an on-device artificial intelligence (AI) chip, designed to empower robots with autonomous operation capabilities independent of external network connectivity.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the newly unveiled chip, dubbed Edge Brain, was introduced during CES 2026 in Las Vegas, marking a significant milestone in the three-year strategic collaboration between Hyundai's Robotics Lab and DeepX, a South Korean AI chip manufacturer. This ultra low-power chip, which consumes less than 5 watts, facilitates real-time perception and autonomous decision-making directly on the robot itself, eliminating the need for cloud or network dependency.
Hyundai Motor disclosed that the Edge Brain technology has already been integrated into various Robotics Lab projects. Among these are Facey, a facial recognition system currently under development, and a delivery robot in its demonstration stage. The company plans to sequentially apply the chip to its additional projects, which include AI security solutions and the development of next-generation mobile robots.
Furthermore, Hyundai Motor intends to broaden the real-world applications of this technology through pilot projects at various locations, such as airports and hospitals, thereby demonstrating the chip's versatility and potential in different sectors.
