Unification Minister Chung Dong-young Discusses Potential Special Envoy for U.S.-North Korea Talks

Seoul: Unification Minister Chung Dong-young announced that the government is considering sending a special envoy to neighboring countries to facilitate dialogue between the United States and North Korea. This initiative was highlighted during a recent policy briefing to President Lee Jae Myung, where the need for such a move was emphasized.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the proposal includes appointing an envoy for "peace on the Korean Peninsula" to engage relevant countries in reopening U.S.-North Korea discussions and inter-Korean dialogue. The Dong-A Ilbo newspaper reported that Chung had been appointed as a Korean Peninsula peace envoy and would visit China and the U.S., although Chung did not confirm this report. He stated that the selection of the peace envoy is not an immediate concern, but he expressed readiness to assume the role if appointed.

The government views the upcoming period, leading to U.S. President Donald Trump's visit to China in April, as crucial for establishing peace in the region. This depends on whether Trump can secure talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. Ministry spokesperson Yoon Min-ho also mentioned that discussions with other government agencies regarding the appointment of a peace envoy are ongoing, though no further details were provided.
