Seoul: Unification Minister Chung Dong-young requested Tuesday that the Netherlands play a bigger role in the international community regarding ongoing negotiations to end the Russia-Ukraine war, saying the outcome is connected to peace on the Korean Peninsula. Chung made the request during a meeting with Dutch Foreign Minister David van Weel as negotiations continued between Ukraine and Russia to end their yearslong conflicts. North Korea has dispatched more than 10,000 soldiers to fight on Russia's side, further complicating the war's landscape.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Chung emphasized the interconnectedness of the Russia-Ukraine peace talks with the peace efforts on the Korean Peninsula. He urged the Dutch minister to advocate more actively in the international community for stability in the region. The Dutch minister acknowledged the impact of North Korea's involvement in the conflict, stating that it extends the challenges faced by South Korea to the Netherlands as well, despite the geographical distance.
The Dutch foreign minister described the military collaboration between Russia and North Korea as detrimental to European security. This partnership not only involves North Korean soldiers and weapons but also raises concerns about what North Korea receives from Russia in return, posing broader security implications.
