Tokyo: South Korea manager Ryu Ji-hyun expressed unwavering faith in his team following a narrow defeat to Japan in the World Baseball Classic (WBC), emphasizing his belief in the squad's resilience and potential for future success.
According to Yonhap News Agency, South Korea began Pool C play at Tokyo Dome with an 11-4 victory over Czechia on Thursday. However, they faced a setback on Saturday, losing 8-6 to Japan after initially leading 3-0 and failing to capitalize on loaded bases in the eighth inning. Despite this, Ryu remained optimistic and focused on the upcoming match against Chinese Taipei, scheduled for noon on Sunday at the same venue. He dismissed concerns about player fatigue, stating his confidence in the team's preparedness and determination.
Ryu highlighted the importance of maintaining a steady course regardless of the outcome of previous games. He emphasized that a single loss would not deter the team's spirit or approach. "My faith in my players does not change," Ryu stated, adding that the team's core strength remains intact despite the setback. He praised captain Lee Jung-hoo for his leadership and motivational pregame speeches, which have been crucial in unifying the players.
Anticipating the game against Chinese Taipei, Ryu announced strategic lineup changes. Moon Bo-gyeong was moved up to the No. 5 spot, swapping positions with Shay Whitcomb, who had a successful game against Czechia but struggled against Japan. Moon, who will serve as the designated hitter, is dealing with back pain after a hard collision with the fence during Saturday's game. Meanwhile, Whitcomb will assume the first base position, and Kim Do-yeong, previously the designated hitter, will play third base.
Kim Do-yeong, the team's leadoff batter, expressed satisfaction with his performance, particularly his contribution to the three-run first inning against Japan. Despite not maintaining that momentum throughout the game, Kim remains optimistic and eager to bring energy to the plate in the upcoming match.
