Yeosu: Prosecutors on Thursday demanded a life sentence for a mother accused of abusing and murdering her four-month-old son last year. The woman in her 30s faces charges of indiscriminately beating her baby before leaving him in a bathtub at their home in Yeosu, approximately 350 kilometers south of Seoul. The infant tragically died from multiple fractures and internal bleeding on October 22.
According to Yonhap News Agency, prosecutors are also seeking a 10-year prison term for the woman's husband, who is charged with neglecting the abuse and threatening a witness in the case. Both the mother and father have been indicted with physical detention. The prosecution emphasized the necessity of severe punishment, citing the lack of remorse or regret from the mother for the abuse, which they noted was severe enough that even an adult would not have been able to endure.
The investigation revealed that the mother had engaged in abusive behavior against her son on 19 occasions since August 24. The case has sparked nationwide outrage following the broadcast of footage showing the abuse by a local channel, which led to a group of lawmakers submitting a petition calling for the heaviest possible punishment against the woman.
