Lee and First Lady Visit Namdaemun Market, Engage with Merchants and Shoppers

Seoul: President Lee Jae Myung and first lady Kim Hea Kyung on Friday made an unexpected visit to the bustling Namdaemun Market in central Seoul, engaging with merchants and shoppers to gauge the current state of people's livelihoods.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the presidential couple's unannounced visit followed a Parents' Day ceremony held nearby. Ahn Gwi-ryung, the vice presidential spokesperson, noted that the visit was part of efforts to support small merchants affected by economic challenges linked to the Middle East conflict. The president and first lady aimed to explore strategies to revitalize traditional markets and enhance programs attracting foreign tourists.

During their visit, merchants expressed satisfaction with the growing number of foreign tourists at the market and sought government assistance to further boost international visitor numbers. President Lee interacted warmly with the crowd, exchanging handshakes, high-fives, and posing for photos with citizens, including children.

The couple also took the time to explore the market, making purchases such as dumplings and eyeglass chains. They concluded their visit by enjoying a meal of "jokbal," a traditional Korean dish featuring steamed and seasoned pork feet, highlighting their support for local cuisine and businesses.
