Beijing: U.S. President Donald Trump has arrived in Beijing for a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, focusing on pressing issues like trade, Iran, and Taiwan. The three-day visit marks Trump's first trip to China since November 2017, set against a backdrop of stalled peace talks between the United States and Iran.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Trump's delegation includes Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who recently concluded discussions with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng in South Korea, will join later.
Before leaving Washington, Trump expressed optimism about the summit, highlighting trade as a primary agenda item. He remarked on the potential for "a lot of good things" to come from the discussions with Xi.
The summit will officially begin with a welcoming ceremony, followed by meetings at the Great Hall of the People. The global community is closely monitoring the summit due to its potential economic and security implications.
Economic discussions are anticipated to explore the creation of a "board of trade" and a "board of investment" to manage trade and investment issues between the two nations. Additionally, Xi might reaffirm China's commitment to purchasing American agricultural products and Boeing aircraft.
Taiwan is another critical topic, with expectations that Xi will reiterate China's stance on the territory. There is speculation about a potential shift in U.S. policy on Taiwan, although officials have stated there has been no change.
The ongoing conflict involving Iran is also expected to be a significant discussion point, with the U.S. seeking China's cooperation in pressuring Tehran for a peace deal. Trump may also address concerns about China's potential export of dual-use goods and weapons to Iran and Russia.
North Korea might also be discussed, as Trump has shown interest in resuming diplomatic efforts with Kim Jong-un, though North Korea's willingness to engage remains uncertain.
The summit will include a state banquet on Thursday evening. Trump's visit will conclude on Friday after a working lunch with Xi.
