Andong: President Lee Jae Myung emphasized the importance of Japan as a key partner for South Korea in tackling global challenges, particularly in the face of a metaphorical "rainstorm" affecting the international community. This statement was made during a bilateral summit with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, held in a hotel in Andong, a city located approximately 190 kilometers southeast of Seoul.
According to Yonhap News Agency, President Lee underscored the necessity for cooperation and communication among countries with shared values during these tumultuous times. He pointed to the successful collaboration between South Korea and Japan in addressing international challenges, highlighting their joint efforts to ensure freedom of navigation in the conflict-stricken Strait of Hormuz and their coordinated evacuations of nationals from the Middle East.
Lee praised the enduring friendship between the two nations, stating, "Amid various difficulties, the solid friendship between our countries is shining more brightly than ever."
Prime Minister Takaichi arrived at Daegu International Airport around noon for her two-day visit, a reciprocal gesture following President Lee's trip to Nara Prefecture in January. Her arrival was met with a warm reception from South Korea's Second Vice Foreign Minister Kim Jina, and extensive security measures were in place, involving around 170 police officers and 40 patrol vehicles.
In Andong, President Lee greeted Prime Minister Takaichi with a welcoming hug, both leaders notably coordinated in their attire, symbolizing the harmony between the two countries. "You have gone to great trouble to come all the way to this small city," Lee expressed to Takaichi.
Following their summit, the leaders plan to make a joint press announcement regarding the outcomes of their meeting, followed by a banquet dinner and a cultural performance. Prime Minister Takaichi is scheduled to return to Japan on Wednesday morning.
