Seoul: The presidential office announced its expectation that China will play a constructive role in matters concerning the Korean Peninsula, following reports of a potential visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping to North Korea as early as next week.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Cheong Wa Dae issued the statement in reaction to reports indicating that Xi is likely to visit North Korea either later this month or in early June. In its statement, Cheong Wa Dae emphasized that the government is closely monitoring related developments. The statement expressed hope that interactions between North Korea and China would contribute positively to peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.
The office further reiterated its expectation for China to engage constructively in issues pertinent to the Korean Peninsula. Xi's prospective visit would come on the heels of his recent summit talks with U.S. President Donald Trump in Beijing, where both leaders reaffirmed their mutual goal of North Korea's denuclearization. The anticipated visit also aligns with Seoul's hopes that Beijing could assist in mediating long-stalled inter-Korean relations.
