Seoul: The Bank of Korea (BOK) announced its active participation in an international project aimed at exploring the potential of tokenized commercial bank deposits to enhance the existing financial infrastructure, particularly in the realm of cross-border payments.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the initiative, named Project Agora, signifies increased collaboration between the BOK, the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), and six other central banks. This global effort seeks to assess the benefits of tokenizing wholesale central bank money and commercial bank deposits in order to improve the monetary system.
The Bank of Canada is also a participant in the project, which underscores a collective interest in understanding how digital currency platforms can be optimized for real-value transactions. The BOK has expressed its commitment to actively engage in trials to test the feasibility and impact of this digital currency initiative.
