President Lee’s Contradictory Stance on Data Breaches Draws Criticism

Seoul: The recent leak of sensitive information from the "Startup for All" program has sent tremors through the entrepreneurial community. The incident has ignited a debate on the government's management and security protocols for its ambitious startup initiative.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the Ministry of SMEs and Startups confirmed that the personal information and business ideas of 5,000 participants were compromised, raising concerns about potential technology theft. The breach was traced back to an AI company, which was ironically chosen by the government to support young entrepreneurs, highlighting significant management flaws in the project.

In response, the ministry has introduced measures such as free registration for trade-secret original certification, technology escrow services, and legal advice. However, these efforts have come under scrutiny for their limited effectiveness in legally preventing the misuse of leaked ideas.

The "Startup for All" initiative was launched following President Lee Jae Myung's call for increased support for budding entrepreneurs. Despite its rapid growth, the program's management has faced criticism for potentially prioritizing expansion over security.

President Lee, who previously advocated for stringent consequences for data breaches in private companies, including hefty fines and resignations of CEOs, has shown a contrasting stance by endorsing the program despite its flaws. His backing of the initiative and praise for Minister Han Seong-sook, despite the program's shortcomings, have raised eyebrows.

Minister Han, who is also the prime minister nominee, apologized for the incident but faces a confirmation hearing amid skepticism about accountability measures. Critics argue that the lack of thorough vetting and witness testimonies may lead to inadequate accountability compared to private sector breaches.

As the government considers a second round of applications for the program, there is a pressing need to address these management issues and restore public trust. The incident underscores the importance of balancing rapid innovation with robust security measures to protect the future of entrepreneurship in the country.
