Government Introduces AI Legal Secretary Service for Public Officials

Seoul: The government has announced the upcoming launch of an "AI legal secretary" service designed to assist public servants in reviewing the legal aspects of policy planning and implementation. This innovative service is set to begin a trial phase this week, as revealed by government officials on Monday.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the AI service, which will be accessible starting Tuesday, is built upon a vast database containing approximately 240,000 cases of judicial precedents, laws, and regulations. It aims to provide answers to a wide range of legal queries posed by officials. The Ministry of Government Legislation spearheaded the development of this service, in collaboration with the Interior Ministry and the Science Ministry.

The service employs a homegrown AI foundation model to generate its responses. It is important to note that the AI legal secretary is intended to serve as an interim reference tool rather than a definitive source of legal judgment, as emphasized by officials. The Government Legislation Minister, Cho Won-cheol, remarked on the complexity of legal interpretation and implementation within public services, highlighting how the AI secretary service is expected to significantly enhance the efficiency of public officials' work.
