Seoul: Christopher Nolan's epic "The Odyssey" has claimed the top position at the South Korean weekend box office, surpassing "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," which previously held the lead, as revealed by data on Monday. The Hollywood blockbuster garnered 1,333,437 admissions over the weekend, raising its total admissions to 1,874,731 by Sunday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the Korean Film Council, responsible for compiling admissions from Friday through Sunday for the weekend chart, released the data. "The Odyssey," which premiered last Wednesday, narrates the perilous journey of Odysseus (portrayed by Matt Damon), the Greek king of Ithaca, following his victory in the Trojan War. The film's star-studded cast also features Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Charlize Theron, and Zendaya.
Meanwhile, "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" attracted 1,264,531 admissions over the weekend, pushing its total admissions to 5,911,933. Sony Pictures, the film's distributor, announced that the latest Spider-Man installment surpassed 6 million admissions on Monday morning, marking its 13th day of release.
This achievement makes the film the second most-watched movie in South Korea this year, overtaking the zombie thriller "Colony." The current record-holder for the most-watched film is the historical drama "The King's Warden," with 16.9 million admissions.
In third place, the Korean animated film "Heartsping Of Love 2: The Legend of the Whale Jewel" gathered 289,451 admissions over the weekend, while the alien epic "Hope" followed with 100,889 admissions.
As of 8:14 a.m. Monday, "The Odyssey" accounted for 63.5 percent of ticket presales, indicating a robust performance. "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" held a 21.2 percent share of ticket presales, according to the data.
