This statement followed President Donald Trump's decision to instruct the Pentagon to scale back South Korea-U.S. military exercises, a move perceived as a gesture of goodwill towards Pyongyang.
According to Yonhap News Agency, a spokesperson from the State Department emphasized the U.S. stance on maintaining an open channel for communication with North Korea. The spokesperson addressed inquiries regarding any ongoing diplomatic efforts at the State Department level and the potential appointment of a new special representative for North Korean affairs. The official noted that there are no current announcements regarding personnel changes.
The decision to adjust joint military exercises comes amid speculation about President Trump's intentions to revive diplomatic engagements with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. Trump and Kim have previously held three face-to-face meetings: in Singapore in June 2018, in Hanoi in February 2019, and at the inter-Korean border village of Panmunjom in June 2019.
