HD Hyundai Heavy Launches Peruvian Naval Landing Support Vessel

Lima: South Korean shipbuilder HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. announced the launch of a landing support vessel, which was built in collaboration with SIMA, Peru's state-owned shipyard, for the Peruvian Navy. The vessel, named BAP Chimbote, is the first of two new landing support vessels and was officially launched at a ceremony held at SIMA's shipyard in Peru.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the launching ceremony was attended by notable figures, including Peruvian President Keiko Fujimori, senior Peruvian government and naval officials, and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries President Joo Won-ho. The collaboration marks a significant step in enhancing Peru's naval capabilities.

In a deal secured in 2024, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries agreed to construct a total of four vessels for the Peruvian Navy. This order includes a frigate, an offshore patrol vessel, and two landing support vessels. The second landing support vessel, named BAP Talara, has recently completed onshore construction.

Under this joint project, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is tasked with the vessel design and providing technical support. SIMA, on the other hand, is responsible for block production, assembly, testing, and conducting sea trials. This partnership exemplifies international collaboration in naval advancement.
