U.S. Approves Potential Sale of AIM-9X Missiles to South Korea

Washington: The U.S. government has sanctioned a potential sale to South Korea involving AIM-9X air-to-air missiles and associated equipment. The State Department indicated on Friday that this proposed sale aims to enhance South Korea's air defense capabilities. According to Yonhap News Agency, the State Department announced the decision concerning the potential government-to-government Foreign Military Sale (FMS), which is valued at approximately $125 million. This proposed sale awaits congressional notification and review. South Korea has expressed interest in acquiring 103 AIM-9X Sidewinder Block II tactical missiles, 10 guidance units, and additional non-major defense items, including training aids, devices, and spare parts. The State Department emphasized that this proposed sale will further U.S. foreign policy and national security objectives by bolstering the security of a key ally. South Korea plays a significant role in political stability and economic progress in the Indo-Pacific region. The propo sed sale is expected to enhance South Korea's ability to address current and future threats, expand its air defense capabilities, deter regional aggression, and ensure interoperability with U.S. Forces. The primary contractor for this potential sale will be RTX Corporation, based in Arlington, Virginia.
