Seoul: Free agent pitcher Go Woo-suk is reuniting with his former club in South Korea after a short stint in the majors. An official with the LG Twins of the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) confirmed that the 28-year-old pitcher is on his way back to Seoul and could finalize his contract before the end of the day.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Go was designated for assignment by the Minnesota Twins last Friday. After clearing waivers and refusing an outright assignment to their Triple-A club, the St. Paul Saints, Go opted for free agency. This decision opened the door for him to rejoin the LG Twins, where he previously played from 2017 to 2023 and became the team's full-time closer in 2019.
During his time with the LG Twins, Go Woo-suk accumulated 139 saves, more than any other KBO closer during that period. He initially signed with the San Diego Padres in January 2024 but moved through multiple MLB organizations before debuting with the Minnesota Twins on July 9. His major league performance was brief, pitching only four games with a 9.00 ERA, after which he faced a suspension for having an illegal substance in his glove.
Despite his struggles in MLB, Go's return to the LG Twins comes at a crucial time. The team, currently fourth in the standings with a record of 64-51-1, is fighting for a postseason spot. However, they have faced significant challenges with their pitching staff due to injuries, resulting in a seventh-place ranking in ERA among KBO teams.
You Young-chan, the team's closer in 2024, underwent season-ending elbow surgery, leading to ongoing bullpen adjustments. While Go's return is expected to strengthen the bullpen, he will not be eligible for postseason play due to roster regulations.
