Seoul: Chung Mong-gyu, former head of the Korea Football Association (KFA), appeared before police Wednesday for questioning over his alleged interference in the appointment of former men's national team head coach Hong Myung-bo. Police investigators have been probing such allegations after a civic group filed a complaint that Chung abused his position to push the KFA board to appoint Hong as head coach in 2024.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Chung arrived at the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's financial crimes unit earlier in the day to attend the session. The investigation, which first began in July 2024, has recently picked up steam after gaining renewed attention in the aftermath of South Korea's elimination from the group stage at this year's World Cup.
Police investigators raided the KFA headquarters and questioned Hong last month as part of the investigation. Hong has told investigators that he did not contact Chung during the hiring process. Both Hong and Chung stepped down from their posts following South Korea's World Cup elimination in June.
