Jincheon: After a 29-19 defeat to Japan in the women's handball final at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, South Korean star attacker Ryu Eun-hee still feels the sting of that loss. Now, three years later, Ryu is determined to avenge that defeat at this year's Asian Games in Japan. "I just want to come home with a smile on my face," Ryu shared during a national team press conference held at the Jincheon National Training Center, south of Seoul. The 36-year-old hopes to turn the tables on Japan, saying, "I remember getting so heartbroken back then, and I want to give that feeling right back to them this time."
According to Yonhap News Agency, Ryu is one of South Korea's most decorated handball players, having won three Asian Games medals: one gold, one silver, and one bronze. As she prepares for what she believes will be her final Asian Games, Ryu expressed her desire to conclude her illustrious career with a second gold medal. "I think this will be my last but maybe my coaches don't agree," she said with a smile. Despite the pressures of representing her country, Ryu emphasized her efforts to enjoy the matches while pushing her limits in training.
The team's dynamic is strengthened by the presence of veteran players like Ryu, who, despite having over a decade's experience more than some teammates, insists that communication remains strong. "Younger players have been bringing a ton of energy," Ryu said. "We are all trying to communicate as well we can."
Team captain Gwon Han-na, also 36, highlighted the role of veterans in setting an example. "We all try to give our best effort in every training session and every game," Gwon stated. "I hope our younger players can learn from what we do. And they have not been shy when talking to us and asking us questions."
Lee Yeon-gyeong, 34, echoed the importance of communication within the team. "I can really sense that this is a very close team," she said, emphasizing their resolve to match Japan's organization on the court.
Woo Bitna, a younger member of the team at age 24, expressed confidence in their preparation. "We have high expectations of ourselves," Woo commented. "The preparation has been grueling but we want to win back the gold medal from Japan."
Goalkeeper Park Sae-young added her perspective as well, highlighting her commitment to strong defense. "As the last line of defense, I will try to stop as many shots as I can. I want to have strong communication with my defenders and work together to fortify our defense."
