BOK to Weigh Timing, Pace of Further Rate Hikes Amid Growth, Inflation

Seoul: The Bank of Korea (BOK) announced on Thursday that it will determine the timing and pace of additional interest rate hikes while assessing domestic and international conditions. This decision comes as accelerating inflation and strong economic growth are predicted to persist for some time.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the central bank's monetary policy report highlighted that sustained economic growth and inflation above target levels necessitate careful evaluation of when to implement further rate hikes. The BOK had previously raised the benchmark interest rate to 3 percent in consecutive meetings in July and August, marking the first such back-to-back increases since early 2023.

During a press conference following last month's rate-setting meeting, the BOK underscored the need for preemptive measures to counteract escalating inflationary pressures. Consumer prices are expected to stay above the 2 percent target due to export-driven economic expansion and investment, which are bolstering household incomes.

The BOK reiterated the importance of managing inflationary concerns amidst ongoing uncertainties caused by prolonged conflicts in the Middle East. Meanwhile, South Korea, Asia's fourth-largest economy, continues to experience robust exports, particularly in the semiconductor sector, fueled by a surge in artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure development.

The central bank pointed out that key considerations include the potential impact of renewed military tensions in the Middle East on cost pressures and the extent to which strong export performance might influence domestic demand and inflationary pressures. Additionally, the BOK is monitoring financial risks related to rising household debt and foreign exchange market fluctuations, which could be affected by changes in U.S. monetary policy.
