Seoul: Hyundai Motor Co. announced its plan to supply 480 hydrogen fuel cell buses to Sunjin Group by 2032, aiming to expand the hydrogen mobility infrastructure in South Korea. The agreement also includes the development of an extensive hydrogen charging network to support the new fleet.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Hyundai Motor signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Sunjin Group, a major public transportation operator managing approximately 1,700 buses in the Seoul metropolitan area and southwestern regions of South Korea. The MOU also involves collaboration with HyNet, a hydrogen charging infrastructure operator, and other related associations to facilitate the transition towards hydrogen-powered transportation.
Under the terms of the agreement, Hyundai Motor will deliver the hydrogen buses in phases over the next decade. Additionally, existing compressed natural gas (CNG) stations in Gyeonggi Province will undergo conversion into hydrogen refueling stations. This transition is part of a broader strategy to promote cleaner and more sustainable transportation solutions.
HyNet is tasked with constructing and managing large-scale hydrogen refueling stations to accommodate the increased demand from the expanded fleet. This initiative is expected to significantly enhance the accessibility and convenience of hydrogen refueling for public transport operators in the region.
