Seoul: A special counsel team on Thursday raided the national election watchdog and other local election commissions as part of its probe into shortages of ballots during the June 3 local elections.
According to Yonhap News Agency, this marked the first raid by special counsel Lee Tae-han's team since its establishment on September 7. The investigation was initiated in response to public outcry after some voters were unable to cast their votes due to the ballot shortages.
Lee's team deployed investigators to the National Election Commission and eight other locations to conduct searches and seizures. The aim was to obtain internal records from the watchdog's offices to further the investigation.
The special counsel team is responsible for examining the election watchdog's management of ballot papers during the local elections, as well as other related allegations of misconduct.
