Seoul: President Lee Jae Myung is set to meet with International Energy Agency (IEA) Executive Director Fatih Birol on Thursday to discuss pressing issues of energy security and other global concerns, according to his office.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the meeting at Cheong Wa Dae is a follow-up to President Lee's proposal during the Group of Seven summit in June. The proposal focused on enhancing cooperation to fortify the resilience of the energy supply chain in Asia-Pacific nations. The presidential office released a statement outlining the agenda of the meeting, which aims to address the vulnerabilities in the global energy supply as highlighted by recent geopolitical and environmental events.
Lee and Birol are expected to exchange insights on strategies to bolster global energy security in light of the escalating energy and climate crises. These challenges have been exacerbated by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and the catastrophic flooding in Nepal.
Birol has played a pivotal role in addressing the global energy crisis, notably by coordinating the release of 400 million barrels of oil from IEA member countries' emergency reserves in response to the Middle East conflict in March, as stated by the presidential office.
