Tokyo:Aichi-Nagoya: Kim Yeong-nam secured a silver medal in the men's 1-meter springboard diving event at the Asian Games, preventing China from achieving a seventh consecutive 1-2 finish in the event. Kim scored 373.30 points during the competition held at Tokyo Aquatics Centre, finishing behind China's Wang Zongyuan, who won gold with 442.75 points. Kim outperformed another Chinese competitor, Liu Chengzan, who earned 361.45 points to take bronze.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the men's 1-meter springboard event has been part of the Asian Games since 1990, with China consistently claiming both gold and silver medals until Kim's recent performance. Prior to Kim's success, South Korea's Woo Haram had earned three consecutive bronze medals in this event from 2014 to 2023.
Earlier in the day, Kim Su-ji captured bronze in the women's 1-meter springboard event with a score of 245.05 points. Lin Shan and Long Yiping of China won gold and silver with scores of 263.05 points and 254.25 points, respectively. This marked Kim Su-ji's second medal of the competition, following her silver in the women's synchronized 3-meter springboard event on Sunday.
