Seoul:A police officer from Seoul's Dongdaemun Police Station has been taken into custody for charges related to possessing, fabricating, and distributing sexually exploitative images, including those of acquaintances.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the officer was formally arrested last month following an extensive investigation aimed at identifying a distributor of illicit images in a Telegram chat room. The investigation led to the seizure of the officer's mobile phone in August, which revealed approximately 2,600 deepfake images, 1,600 images of child exploitation, and about 1,300 illegally filmed images.
The officer reportedly used artificial intelligence to fabricate around 400 nude images of people he knew between March 2022 and July of this year, distributing dozens of them through the Telegram platform. This officer had previously been investigated for a similar offense and had received a suspended indictment before joining the police force.
"As soon as we were informed of the case, we put him on standby and he has now been relieved of duty," stated an official from the Dongdaemun Police Station. "We can't confirm suspicions and other circumstances in detail."
