North Korea Holds Cabinet Meeting to Evaluate Economic Progress

Pyongyang:North Korea convened an expanded Cabinet meeting via video conference to assess its economic performance during the third quarter, as reported by state media on Tuesday.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the meeting was led by Premier Pak Thae-song on Monday. Discussions focused on strategies to achieve this year's economic objectives, as outlined by the Rodong Sinmun, the nation's primary state newspaper.

During the meeting, officials revisited the key goals established at the Ninth Congress of the Workers' Party of Korea, conducted in February. This congress introduced a new five-year plan extending through 2030, emphasizing economic growth and self-reliance.

Vice Premier Kim Tok-hun noted that significant progress had been made, reinforcing the foundation of a self-reliant economy. He urged officials to abandon passive and risk-averse attitudes to rectify "defects and bias" identified in the execution of economic policies.

The meeting specifically emphasized the importance of boosting production in sectors such as electricity, coal, agriculture, and construction. It also highlighted the need for work on the fifth phase of the Hwasong district, a new residential area in Pyongyang, and the development of local industrial factories.
