Pyongyang:A Russian delegation from the emergency ministry has visited Pyongyang to explore potential enhancements in disaster management collaboration, as reported by North Korean state media.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the delegation was led by Aleksandr Kurenkov, Russia's minister of extraordinary situations, and arrived in the North Korean capital on Sunday. The visit was highlighted by meetings with Kim Chol-nam, North Korea's minister of disaster management, and Vladimir Topekha, the charge d'affaires ad interim of the Russian Embassy in North Korea.
The Russian team had previously visited Pyongyang in July of the previous year, where they inspected disaster prevention and response facilities and engaged in discussions on scientific and technological cooperation. This ongoing visit follows an agreement signed in December between the Russian and North Korean ministries aimed at enhancing specialist training and scientific and technical cooperation.
The strengthening of ties between Pyongyang and Moscow in various sectors, including military and economic cooperation, has been noted following summits between their leaders in September 2023 and June 2024. North Korea, which frequently suffers from flooding, is reportedly looking to bolster its natural disaster response capabilities.
