South Korean and Singaporean Foreign Ministers Discuss Korean Peninsula Issues

Seoul:South Korea's Foreign Minister Cho Hyun engaged in a telephone conversation with his Singaporean counterpart, Vivian Balakrishnan, to address issues concerning the Korean Peninsula and regional security, as reported by Seoul's foreign ministry.

According to Yonhap News Agency, this discussion follows Balakrishnan's visit to Seoul in May, which occurred after his meeting with North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui in Pyongyang. This sequence of events underscores Singapore's active diplomatic involvement with both Koreas.

Singapore has established diplomatic relations with both Seoul and Pyongyang and was the host of the significant 2018 summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. During their recent talks, the ministers exchanged views on the Korean Peninsula and regional matters, agreeing to collaborate for peace and stability in the region.

In a separate development, First Vice Foreign Minister Park Yoon-joo conducted the second bilateral strategic dialogue with Eksiri Pintaruchi, Thailand's permanent secretary for foreign affairs, in Bangkok. Their discussions focused on the urgency of finalizing negotiations for a South Korea-Thailand Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) and explored cooperation in areas such as intellectual property protection, combating online scams, and controlling drug smuggling.
