Seoul:FC Seoul is on the brink of securing its first South Korean football league title in ten years, potentially celebrating as soon as Sunday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, FC Seoul currently leads the 12-club K League 1 standings with 65 points, achieved through 20 wins, five draws, and six losses. Ulsan HD FC trails in second place with 47 points.
With seven matches remaining for each team, FC Seoul will clinch their seventh championship if Ulsan HD FC fails to win on Saturday and if FC Seoul secures a victory on Sunday. Ulsan HD FC is set to face Bucheon FC 1995 on Saturday at 430 p.m., where even a draw would only bring them to 48 points. Should FC Seoul triumph over Gimcheon Sangmu FC the following day, they would reach 68 points, creating an insurmountable 20-point lead with six matches left.
This would make FC Seoul the fastest club to clinch a K League 1 title under the current format, alongside Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors' records in 2018 and 2025, achieving the feat after 32 matches.
FC Seoul has not lost consecutive matches this season and tops the league in both goals scored, with 58, and goals conceded, only 26. Polish striker Patryk Klimala leads the team with 14 goals, just one behind the league leader, while winger Jeong Seung-won has added eight goals and six assists. Goalkeeper Gu Sung-yun has been integral to their success, helping secure 13 clean sheets, second only to Gangwon FC's 14.
Head coach Kim Gi-dong is now realizing the potential that was hoped for upon his appointment in 2024. Despite finishing fourth in his first season and slipping to sixth in 2025, Kim has guided FC Seoul to the brink of a long-awaited championship, overcoming previous frustrations among fans.
