U.S. Acknowledges South Korea’s Concerns Over USFK Commander’s Remarks

Seoul:The United States has expressed understanding of South Korea's objections to recent comments made by the U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) Commander, Gen. Xavier Brunson, regarding the inter-Korean border and Seoul's plans to assume wartime operational control (OPCON) from Washington.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Seoul was upset by Brunson's description of the southern fence line along the border with North Korea as the starting point of South Korean territory, a statement seen as infringing upon South Korea's sovereignty. This has led to demands from lawmakers for Brunson to retract his comments and issue an apology.

Brunson also spoke about "new standards" for the OPCON transfer at a forum in Washington, emphasizing that changes in conditions, such as North Korea's military advancements, need to be considered. While Seoul aims to regain OPCON next year, Washington remains cautious about the timeline due to political factors.

South Korea has communicated its stance to the U.S. and received a response acknowledging its concerns. The two nations have discussed the issue through various channels. A USFK official clarified that Brunson's reference to changed conditions was about shifts in the security environment caused by North Korea's weapons development and its experience in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Brunson, who also leads the United Nations Command (UNC), has sparked criticism which prompted the UNC to clarify that his comments were about his responsibilities and not meant to question South Korea's sovereignty. The UNC confirmed its commitment to the alliance and the defense of South Korea.
