South Korea and Czech Republic Assess Progress in Joint Nuclear Energy Project

Seoul:South Korea and the Czech Republic have conducted a review of their ongoing joint nuclear energy project, focusing on enhancing bilateral cooperation in this sector, as announced by the industry ministry on Tuesday.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the review took place during a virtual meeting between South Korea's Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan and his Czech counterpart, Karel Havlicek. This meeting followed the formal signing of a contract last year by a South Korean consortium, led by Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power Co., to construct the Dukovany nuclear power plant in the Czech Republic.

During the third meeting of the Dukovany Steering Committee, both nations confirmed that the project is progressing as planned and deliberated on ways to deepen cooperation within the global nuclear energy industry. Minister Kim also raised concerns regarding the European Union's Industrial Accelerator Act, suggesting it might impede non-EU countries' involvement in the nuclear energy sector. He urged the Czech government to engage in diplomatic efforts to prevent any negative impact on the bilateral relationship.

The parties have agreed to convene the fourth committee meeting in South Korea later this year, in conjunction with business events aimed at fostering exchanges between nuclear energy companies from both countries.
