Accra:Seoul The top U.S. envoy to South Korea has characterized the current state of relations between Seoul and Washington as "turbulence," emphasizing the need for efforts to strengthen the alliance into a more balanced partnership.
According to Yonhap News Agency, U.S. Ambassador Michelle Steel made these remarks during a session hosted by the American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM). Her comments come amid tensions in security and trade relations, particularly concerning the implementation of their summit agreement from last October and intelligence sharing on North Korea. Furthermore, there is ongoing discourse around Seoul's initiative to reclaim wartime operational control (OPCON) from the U.S.
Ambassador Steel explained that alliances can experience fluctuations in strength and highlighted the ongoing efforts to enhance the partnership between the Republic of Korea and the U.S. Despite agreements on various economic and security commitments, progress has been slow due to issues such as legal scrutiny over U.S.-listed e-commerce giant Coupang Inc., which has become a sticking point.
The U.S. has also reduced intelligence sharing with South Korea over a confidential disclosure by South Korea's unification minister regarding a North Korean nuclear facility. The timing of the OPCON transfer remains another unresolved issue between the allies.
Ambassador Steel urged South Korea to ensure fair treatment for American companies operating in Korea, such as Coupang, advocating for a level playing field without discrimination. She noted improvements since the signing of the joint fact sheet and called for South Korea to take a more leading role alongside the U.S. in the Indo-Pacific region, referencing South Korea's significant economic growth since the Korean War.
Her statements align with strategies from the Donald Trump administration that focus on countering China's growing influence in the region.
