Samsung SDI America to Supply 1 GWh of ESS Solutions to Alpha Omega Power

Doha:Seoul Samsung SDI Co., a major South Korean battery maker, announced that its U.S. unit will supply energy storage system (ESS) solutions to Alpha Omega Power (AOP) by December under a new contract.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Samsung SDI America (SDIA), the company's Michigan-based subsidiary, has agreed to deliver 1 gigawatt-hour (GWh) of ESS battery solutions to the U.S. energy storage developer. This latest agreement adds to a previous contract signed last year, with the two agreements together covering a total of 1.5 GWh and valued at hundreds of billions of won.

The second agreement is expected to strengthen the domestic supply chain in support of the next generation of energy infrastructure, commented AOP Chief Executive Paul Choi. SDIA will supply its Samsung Battery Box (SBB) 1.7, an integrated ESS solution featuring nickel-cobalt-aluminum (NCA) batteries, which will be manufactured at the StarPlus Energy (SPE) plant in Indiana.

SPE, a 5149 joint venture between Samsung SDI and Stellantis N.V., operates an electric vehicle battery plant in Indiana and also produces ESS batteries. Samsung SDI has secured numerous ESS-related contracts with U.S. energy companies this year and is actively engaged in discussions with other local customers for additional orders.
