Gunsan:Hyundai Motor Group announced plans to establish two special purpose companies (SPCs) next month as part of its initiative to develop artificial intelligence (AI) data centers. This move is aligned with the group's strategy to expand its presence in AI infrastructure.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Hyundai Motor Group's affiliates, including Hyundai Motor Co., Kia Corp., Hyundai Mobis Co., Hyundai Engineering and Construction Co., and Hyundai AutoEver Corp., will be involved in the investment. The two SPCs will have distinct roles; one will focus on data center construction and infrastructure development, while the other will manage graphics processing unit (GPU) services.
The project is set to commence in March 2027, with construction taking place in the Saemangeum reclaimed land area in Gunsan, located approximately 200 kilometers southwest of Seoul. The group aims to begin commercial operations by early 2030.
This development follows a visit by Hyundai Motor Group Vice Chairman Chang Jae-hoon to Saemangeum, where he reiterated the group's commitment to investing 9 trillion won (US$6.7 billion) in the region. During the visit, Chang highlighted plans to transform Saemangeum into a central hub for AI data centers, robotics, and hydrogen-related industries as part of Hyundai's broader diversification efforts beyond the automotive sector.
