Seoul:The veterans ministry has named the late Canadian Army officer Lt. Col. James Stone as the hero of the month for November, recognizing his leadership in a pivotal battle during the Korean War from 1950 to 1953.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Lt. Col. Stone commanded the 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, and was instrumental in the victory at the Battle of Gapyeong in April 1951. This battle, located about 55 kilometers northeast of Seoul, was critical during the conflict as Stone's battalion successfully repelled Chinese forces, enabling South Korean and U.N. forces to establish their defensive positions.
The 2nd Battalion was notably the first Canadian unit to be awarded the U.S. presidential unit citation, the highest military decoration for combat gallantry.
