Seoul: Acting President Han Duck-soo called on the nation Wednesday to help prevent the further spread of deadly wildfires that have ravaged the southeastern region for days. Han issued the call in an address to the nation, saying the wildfires that began in Sancheong County in North Gyeongsang Province last Friday have spread to neighboring Andong, Cheongsong and beyond, killing at least 18 people and producing 23,000 evacuees.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Han highlighted the severity of the situation by stating that the "record for worst ever wildfire is being rewritten." From the government complex, he emphasized that despite deploying all available personnel and equipment, the crisis remains critical. Han outlined the government's response measures, which include issuing wildfire warnings, mobilizing firefighters nationwide, and declaring special disaster zones to facilitate swift recovery and assistance for affected individuals.
To combat the wildfires, Han reported that 128 helicopters, 1,144 military personnel, 3,135 firefighting personnel, 1,186 extinguishing personnel, and 4,652 public servants and others have been deployed. However, strong winds have continued to hinder progress, resulting in the destruction of 17,000 hectares of forest and 209 houses and factories.
Han urged the public to refrain from burning debris around rice paddies or fields and to avoid carelessly discarding cigarette butts. He also advised against carrying flammable items such as lighters or burners when entering mountainous areas to prevent further outbreaks.
The acting president announced that the government intends to intensify crackdowns on illegal incineration and will enforce strict penalties for violators. Additionally, Han stated that there will be a review and improvement of guidelines for responding to and preventing wildfires to better prepare for future incidents.
