Acting President Lee Ju-ho Congratulates Pope Leo XIV on Papal Election


Seoul: Acting President Lee Ju-ho on Friday extended his congratulations to Pope Leo XIV on his election as the leader of the Roman Catholic Church. Lee expressed his hopes for enhanced cooperation between South Korea and the Vatican in his message to the newly elected pontiff.



According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee’s congratulatory remarks followed the election of Pope Leo XIV on Thursday, succeeding the late Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21. Lee stated, “The government and the people of the Republic of Korea truly congratulate your election as the 267th pope.” He further expressed confidence in the pope’s commitment to humanity and peace, emphasizing that these values will play a crucial role in addressing international conflicts.



Lee also highlighted the desire for increased cooperation and exchange between South Korea and the Vatican, reflecting the government’s aspirations for stronger bilateral relations. In support of this, the government plans to dispatch a delegation to attend Pope Leo’s forthcoming inauguration ceremony.
